Project 2

Module 1

The second assignment tasks us with creating a map and utilizing location data and different ways of applying that data to present it visually. This assignment seeks to use different methods of 3D imaging to display the student's locations of choice. It seeks to test our understanding in regards to 3D modeling and also increase our understanding, building off what was learned during the first project.

Activity 1

Opening mapbox for the first time was overwhelming,
I started by playing around and navigating the map,
dragging my navigation around and zooming in on geographical areas I
recognized. I tried to get close to oakville as much as I could in this picture. I began to play around with the custom map features found
especially with colors, I was simply inserting random colors
as I saw fit, playing with the many features I found on map box that instead of having a color fill, it was possible to
use different symbols in the place of those colors. I played around with this feature a bit and got used to it. But I found that using this was quite straining on my eyes due to the repeating and harsh patterns provided by the shapes.
I didn't like this and resumed to use solid colors. more experimentation with colors and in particular, country boundaries and labels. I was simply navigating and experimenting with a few tags or labels at the time of this screenshot. I've started using a more bolder color palette to distinguish different parts of a map. Seperating the buildings and bodies of water. in this image in particular, I tried to get a view of
the area that I worked at during my part time job. In comparison to a place like toronto, it's not as littered with buildings but is still fairly populated. Trying to create a color palette for the map, utilizing different blues and zooming out.
I found this shot in particular to be quite mesmerizing due to how the roads winded around, creating interesting shapes that decorated the
surface of the land. I made a new styleset and did more experimentation with the land borders, using a Pale red to represent them. I found this feature, or in particular the stroke width I utilized during this screenshot to be too large. This gave the appearance of the lines to be quite jarring. I believe that in the future, I use a lower stroke width for the boundaries Playing around with the default style set and navigating the surroundings shown on screen. I was simply taking a picture of areas I found intriguing. I saw the lines over the bodies of water being roads and found it interesting. Playing around with the land markers features to represent different points of interests. Thsi In my mind, overcrowded the map greatly since any building or road can be seen as a POI depending on the features. I attempted to make a map that is similar to the default nightmode we receive on differentapps. I also found
a random area on the map that had very few buildings. Labels were not enabled at the time of this screenshot, so I don't know where exactly the map is focused on. I was simply enjoying
the fact that playing around with mapbox led to new discoveries for me everytime. Playing around with the color features and labelling. There is No
particular reason as to why I chose the colors I did, i simply wanted
to play around with mapbox found out that you can rotate the plane to look similar to the view you wouold receive
to those maps on a plane when traveling from place to place. looking at it from that angle felt very nostalgic for me.
It provided a unique perspective of the landmass and it was a new perspective, quite literally for me to look at. Playing around more with colors and getting comfortable with the features. Navigating around the map and playing around with colors, attempting to get comfortable with mapbox an attempt to use heatmaps and different color palettes, seeing how they appear visually. More experimenting and building off styles I already had using the base style provided by mapboxx, I was analyzing the different topology and surfaces found on each area. View of toronto that I got from experimenting with mapbox. While I'm not familiar with this area in prticular, I am familiar with the city itself. Zoomed in view of the place I work at outside of school part time, I wanted to include this location Or area in particular because
I always joke about how there are several coffee places lined up and now there's proof of that. At least for one picture, I wanted to show how sheridan looked on mapbox and managed to Locate it, taking this picture as a result. It's interesting how the timhortons that is located within the building is marked on this map, despite it being a facility found inside the campus building itself Picture Of the area where I grew up and Lived in. I was heavily considering this area for my laser cut map. When considering different locatiions for me to use for laser cutting, I wanted to get a picture of an area that I've visited before. This area also meant a lot to my family.
The city of Antipolo in the Philippines is where my family lived before coming to Canada. I remember visiting this area during Christmastime and it being covered in lives. While looking at this
while using mapbox, I though that the structure of the building was interesting to look at. I like this area simply for the fact that you can identify a building of importnce, which Is the church, based purely off of the shape of the building. Earlier Picture that I took while using mapbox early on. Experimentation with heat maps on mapbox Another Picture of the UI of when I was looking at mapbopx's features during my first session
Map box as a resource was easy to use once I figuteal out how to use it. Initially while starting to understand the program, I failed to understand the different features once until I figuteal out how to import certain features, such as waterways, landmark symbols, such as the dots utilized to represent cities, buildings of note and even roads. I found it to be fun, navigating and looking for places I knew. Said places ranged from where I lived, the location of the Sheridan campus, and lastly, where my family grew up before they immigrated to Canada. I'm excited to learn how to use it further for this project out of curiousity and how it will be adapted into a 3D model of our choosing.

Activity 2

I was really amazed by how clean the cuts were when analyzing the finished product of the laser cut wood. The edges are most Likely smoother due to the fact that the woods been sanded thoroughly. I was looking at the designs that my friends and fellow classmates picked for the assignment. Honestly, i look at the result of mine and realize how complex it was choosing full on characters. I enjoy looking at the unique designs of everyone and asking why they picked said design for the assignment. For my design, I used an artwork that I had commissioned an artist friend of mine to do early into the school year. When I remembered that it was easier to prep illustrations that were already monotone, I instantly thought of this artwork. I mainly picked something more complex to put the laser cutter to the test. Safe to say that in conclusion, I was not dissapointed. I had another reason for picking this design because I wanted to treasure something dear to me. I enjoy making these projects fun to do and this was a solution. A lot of people questioned why I would pick something so complex for a workshop. I simply wanted to try it. But I also took it as an oppourtunity to show a little love to something that was made just for me. After a little bit of sanding the stand after it had been freshly laser cut, the quality of the cut amazed me. Aside from lines or fills being more thicker than I thought, it is pretty accurate to what I had provided. Looking again, at the examples that were created by my friends, a lot of them only used one setting for the laser cutter. They all came out well and I'm thankful for the student who took the time to help us understand the process. Before my stand started cutting, I hung around rhe laser cutting room to watch it print the group before me. I was surprised to see how fast the machine itself works. it's actually quite mesmerizing and they inspired me to record a time lapse of the process when it became my turn. Right before we were told to experiment with the laser cutter, yhe class were provided examples of the final result for this upcoming project. I was mostly intrigued by how many layers a laser cutter can create. Some of the final models had many layers and utilized the different settings accordingly Such as representing water through cutting out the body of water, or they had created a 3D effect by stacking the different layers. We got to see the template that we would use for this project as featured in the laser cutting video provided to us in the end. It meant that there would be a lot of creative freedom for the pattern or design that we would feature on the phone stand. In the group I was put in, we all picked unique designs that we all thought would look cool laser cut, I remember when preparing mine for laser cutting, I Mixed up the effects of both the red and black setting due to a misccomunication, I could've ended up with a failed workshop product. That would've resulted in me feeling sad. I am glad that I fixed it and turned out I was right the first time around. I stayed around for most of the process and used my phone to record the laser cutter doing its job while I took additional pictures using my ipad. By the time I had gotten my ipad from the classroom, the laser cutting Process was already 1/4 completed. It was interesting that it works horizontally and on all the images at once, rather than one image at a time. I found it interesting that it was cutting all of them at the same time, seeing it rapidly move from right to Left was super cool and its very fun to watch in the timelapse. The person helping us with this workshop activity explained that it was very important to keep the board or material very stable and firm. They did this using pins to keep the board in place. The laser cutter accidentally began with cutting or going straight through the board, leaving room for uneven cuts. Thankfully the person demonstrating quickly fixed this issue and the laser cutter resumed its job. One thing to note is that I liked the smell Of the burnt wood that wafted around the laser cutting room for some reason view of my phone recording the laser cutter while its working The laser cutting was mostly hovering over my artwork or side of the board because it constantly was working on cutting or printing the details of My artwork before creating simple details of the other artworks until it rinsed and repeated that process until completion. the board started to cut instead of engrave first, leaving room there for potential disaster if the board kept moving back and forth, as a result of it not being consistently stable. Close up of the final cut out or my laser cutting experience. I'm very happy with the results. I started to play around with projection mapping and experimented with pictures I took during the first workshop. I precomped most of the materials in after effects and used perspective to give the illusion of it being projected onto the wall i tried to used the 3d feature to create the walls and heres how that looked. I added a point Light so that it appeared more 3D in this layout. I ended up using the masking tool to crop out the pool table since using solids to mask it was going to take more time and more resources. This was my solution to quicken the workflow for myself. View of my screen when editing. I used two camera to make sure the effects on the walls reflected on each other seamlessly despite being on different layers. View of the SSU compared to what I would normally seein the 3D camera. I personally feel like I could've positioned the walls better than overextending them until the solution is 'fixed'. I imported a typography video I created to see how it would project onto the wall. The way the video was projected was interesting, but reflected, so the transfer wasn't as seamless as other attempts. Previewing the version of the project with the typogrphy video. I'm thinking I only feature a video like that on one side of the wall to make it look better, or avoid using text based videos entirely. I experimented using Motion graphic shape layers to travel across the wall in quick sucession. I thought the video was very pleasing to watch. I kept adding layer after layer and ended up with a result I was happy with. I didn't want to overcrowd the wall with fancy graphics, so I ended up restraining myself as a result. I tested projection Mapping by importing previous videos I edited and playing around with the angle of the walls to see what result that would produce.

Material Workshop 1

I took some picturesin the SSU, especially now that its renovated, the space feels more free and spacious despite it being the same space I would hang around ewvery day before class to do some homework or study. A picture of a wall in the J building that features a Map. I thought it would be interesting to photograph this wall or area in particular purely for the fact that it's a landmark since it features a map, something that someone who's unfamilliar with the layout of the campus would look for to figure out where to go I simply enjoy the view out of this window ansd like to admire the architecture of the Sheridan Campus sometimes.

Material Workshop 2

Adding a carpet to the floor is helpful during rainy or snowy days/ seasons. From my experience, I've almost slipped a lot in these areas, even if I'm walking slowly. This can be viewed as me clumsy but It's still a hazard that exists. Adding one of these rugs or mats in the open area would lessen the spread of wet floors or mud in the campus, resulting in less mess, or lessen the stains that snow, mud and other materials can cause. Another bulletin board could fill up space of the wall that's empty, allowing for other student groups such as clubs or workshop events more room to promote. Being a college campus, Sheridan itself has a lot of different activities for students to engage in. Only onces a year will there be a club fair and no one will hear from those clubs again. Also this bulletin board being near the practice areas or classrooms of students who participate in the drama or theater programs.
They're constantly promoting different shows they're rehearsing. The only Other area I know where they promote these acts are in a basically empty hallway that people only walk through, since as of my recollection of it, there's not many active classes there throughout the week. Having somewhere to sit is a nice option,
this is also something found in other locations of the campus.
There's a lot of open space and there is potential to have something to fill up that space without
compromising where students will walk as it's not in the middle of their path.

Final Project 2 Design

Physical Published Model

The final project consists of a projection mapping demo that I made using videos I edited with after effects. I also played with touch designer to recreate the video as close as I can to the submitted video. The process of creating this animation itself was fun, exploring different visual choices on what to project onto the walls before narrowing down my options.
